Информация за страница Colleges

A college is an educational institution or a constituent part of one. In the United States the word “college” formally refers to a constituent part of university. In some national educational systems secondary schools may be called colleges. In Australia the term is applied to any independent or private non-government secondary school as distinct from a state school. There has also been a recent trend to rename or create government secondary schools as colleges. Some state high schools in Victoria are referred to as secondary colleges. Many government-run secondary schools in a number of Canadian cities are called “collegiates” collegiates institutes, a complicated form of the word college which avoids the usual post secondary connotation. This is because these secondary schools have traditionally focused on academic, rather than vocational, subjects and ability levels. Some of the private secondary schools choose to use “college” in their names nevertheless.

The term can also refer following its etymology, to any formal group of colleagues set up under statute or regulation as well as an educational institution. Other collegiate bodies include professional associations, particularly in medicine and allied professions. The term in Canada usually refers to technical, applied arts, community college or applied science school. These are post secondary institutions that grants diplomas, certificates, bachelor’s degrees and associate’s degree. The term also applies to distinct entitles within a university to the residential colleges in the United Kingdom. These colleges act independently but in affiliation or federation with the university actually granting the degrees. Trinity College for example was once an independent institution but became later federated with the University of Toronto. Now it is one of the residential colleges though it remains a degree granting institution through its Faculty of Divinity. There are also universities referred to as art colleges, empowered to grant academic degrees of MFA, Modes and sometimes collaborative PhD degrees. Distance and online education use the term in the name of British sense. One use of the term in the American sense is by the Canadian Football League calling its annual entry draft the Canadian College Draft.

In Ireland the term is normally used to describe an institution of tertiary education. University students often say they attend college rather than university. No university providing teaching or research directly until 1989. They were formally offered by a constituent college of the university. The University of Dublin is the country’s only ancient university. It is modeled on the collegiate universities of Cambridge and Oxford created during the reign of Elizabeth 1. The National University of Ireland that is founded in 1908 considered of constituent colleges and recognized colleges until 1997 among more modern foundations. The former are now referred to as constituent universities. These are institutions that are essentially universities in their own right. A number of private colleges exist such as DBS providing postgraduate and undergraduate courses that are validated by HETAC and in some cases by other Universities.
